Promising Social Media Statistics for Small Business

Back in August I posted a blog called Steps to Social Media, offering simple steps to use this powerful tool for your business. A new blog from Social Media Examiner offered statistics showing the power of this medium for small business. I thought I’d highlight a few here but you can find the full list in the blog called 26 Promising Social Media Stats for Small Business.

1. There are more than 800 million active Facebook users and over 200 million of those joined in 2011.
2. Over 80% of ALL Americans use a social network of some kind and 40% of those users do so on a mobile phone.
3. American’s spend more time on Facebook than any other website. According to Facebook, more than half of their users long in every day, on average have 130 friends and are connected to 80 pages, events and groups. (Once such page could be yours!)
4. On average Facebook users spend 20 minutes in their account on each visit and most log in three to four times per week.
5. 44% of small-to-mid-sized business decision-makers use social media, 86% of which use Facebook, 41% use LinkedIn and 33% use Twitter.
6. 51% of Facebook and 64% of Twitter users are more likely to buy from brands they follow.

The bottom line? If you are not engaging in social media you are missing out! NALA Members have a useful tool in their Multi-Marketing solution to tie all your social media accounts together and coordinate with your email and text message marketing efforts.

Privacy Controls for Facebook

Privacy Controls for Facebook

I am a Facebook junkie and I admit I hear all the privacy talk and worry about it from time to time. I came across a blog on Social Media Examiner offering tips on this topic called 5 Ways to Control Your Facebook Privacy and thought I would share it with you.

1. Facebook Subscribe Button The subscribe button allows people to subscribe to your public posts as opposed to requesting a friendship. You don’t approve subscribers so anyone can read your posts. Fortunately you are not opted-in unless you choose to be. When you do make an update you can decide who will see it, public, friends or custom. Custom can include friend lists you create. I have lists of family, friends, business associates, clients, etc. so that I only share what I want with who I want. If you do want to opt into Subscribe go to www.facebook.com/about/subscribe to learn more and opt-in.

2. Changing your Facebook privacy settings Privacy setting has been streamlined. Click on the down arrow button in the upper-right corner of Facebook and select Privacy Settings. You have options ranging from How You Connect to How Tags Work, Limit the Audience for Pasts Posts, and Blocked People and Apps. The How you Connect section allows you to determine who people send you requests, if they can post on your timeline, send you messages, and more.

3. Controlling how people @tag you. People can tag you in photos and posts using the @ symbol and typing your name. You might not want your old school friends to post embarrassing pictures of you and tag you for all of your friends to see. Within the How Tags Work section you have the option of controlling tags so that you must approve any tag of you before it is posted. If you don’t want to review you also can remove tags after the fact.

4. Controlling apps and websites. Facebook apps are third-party plugins that can enhance or detract from your Facebook experience. Unfortunately they can also be a big source of spam in your posts. It’s a good idea to review apps that can access your information and be choosey about it. If you use the networked blogs app you want to make sure your privacy settings allow that blog to be shared with others. This is not the case for other apps however. I clicked a link once for an app of an IQ test and the next thing I knew my Facebook was taken over and spamming everyone on my list. I had to change my password to resolve the situation.

5. Facebook Ads. Facebook has a feature pairing friends with ads. If you “Like” a business then your name may show up on the ad for that business on your friends pages. If you do not want that you can change it by clicking on the down arrow on the upper right hand corner of the page again. This time go to Account Settings and choose Facebook Ads. Under “Ads and Friends” you can Edit social ad setting. You can choose to “Pair my social actions with ads for only friends, or no one.

So those are some privacy basics. If you have any questions or tips you would like to share please post them in the comments section. I’d love to hear from you.

What, Where, How to use QR Codes to grow your business

Repost from July 8, 2011.

If you read the title and said to yourself, “grow my business with what?” then keep reading.  If you know what they are but are not sure how to use them to grow your business, keep reading.  If you have used them but are open to new ideas…well you might want to keep reading too.  Social Media Examinerhad a great article earlier this year and in case you missed it, I thought I’d offer some highlights here.

QR Codes are similar to bar codes used by retailers to track inventory but QR codes hold a lot more information.  The codes can be read on any camera-enabled Smartphone and from there they can upload business card information, link to your website, driving directions to your business and an endless list of other possibilities.

Microsoft also has a product similar to QR codes called MS tags.  Unlike QR codes that can be read by a variety of tag readers, Microsoft’s product can only be read by their tag reader.  The other difference between the two is the MS tags are in color offering more creative possibilities.

Now that you know what they are, how can they be used to grow your business?

Initially you can use QR codes to build community in a couple of ways.  For one, customers can use your QR code to join your email to text messaging list or to “Like” you on Facebook.    Once your community is built, you can use codes for Calls to Action.  One example is links to coupons or special offers that you can change as often as you like.   Additionally they can be used to link to installation instructions, directions to your business, recommendations for complementary products and services, and customer feedback forms.

So where can the codes be used?  Business cards are a good spot as well as brochures and other marketing materials.  They can be placed on the side of a truck, product tags, convention and event nametags, restaurant menus, and point of sale receipts to name a few.

There are many practical examples already in use.  Many airlines have begun adapting these codes as boarding passes that are scanned directly from your Smartphone.   Google Places will send you a QR code when you register your business that links to your company’s website.

Acquiring your free QR Code is simple.  There are a variety of QR Code creators out there.  For the code on this page I used qrstuff.com.  I like this site because you can have your code printed directly from the site onto business cards, stickers, buttons, cups and apparel.

According to the blog in Social Media Examiner, the next generation of QR Code will hold even more information and will not require an Internet connection.  As a small business QR Codes provide a great opportunity to create, build and maintain relationships with your customers in your community.

Useful Mobile Apps for growing number of Smartphone Users

According to a recent Nielsen blog, 38% of mobile phone users own smart phones and that number is expected to be over 50% by years end.  Sales in the us are expected to hit 95 million, becoming the highest-selling electronic device.  Since so many of you are investing time, energy and money into your iPods, Androids, and Blackberrys I thought you might appreciate a recent blog from Social Media Examiner called, 44 Useful Mobile Apps for Social Media Marketers.  I will highlight a few here.

The first app I’m a big fan of is Dropbox.  Dropbox is usefully not only for your cell phone but for your computer as well.  This free service lets you store your photos, docs and videos online.  Once you install the software on your computer it will create a file in you Documents Folder that will update to all computers and mobile devices attached to that account.

Another personal favorite is the Kindle app.  This app allows you to read any of the 950,000 books in the Kindle Store from your phone or tablet.  Amazon’s Whispersync will automatically sync your last page read, bookmarks and notes across all devices upon which you have downloaded the app.  This means if you read a book from your iPad or Kindle, you can pick up where you left off on your Smartphone.

DocumentsToGo  enables you to edit, create and view Word and Excel files on your Blackberry, Palm OS, iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch or Android.  Additionally you can send and receive attachments using the device’s built-in mail app, including a desktop app with two-way file sync.

One of the biggest issues with Smartphone’s is battery usage which can drain quickly.  The blog mentions Battery Pro for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.  There is also Battery Indicator Pro for Android and Batterysaver Pro for Blackberry.

Android and iPhone can search app stores not only by what the app is called but also by what the app does with an application called Chomp.  Free in both iTunes and the Android Marketplace, this handy app will making searching for apps much simpler.

LiveProfile is another app that can be used by iPhones, Blackberries and Androids alike.  This completely free fast app is a messenger that will enable you to send photos, videos, post status updates and much more.

Need to update multiple social networks but don’t want to spend the time logging into each one?  TweetDeck, now a part of Twitter will enable iPhone and Android users to do just that.

So that’s 7 out of 40 apps mentioned on Social Media Examiner.  Check out the other 33 and if you have a favorite let us know so we can share your information with others.  Isn’t that what social networking is all about?

Word of Mouth Advertising…engaging your employees

If you have your own business you know how valuable Word-of-Mouth can be.  Customers endorsing you, your product or service to their friends and family are probably the most powerful form of marketing available…and it’s free!  Directories like Yelp and TripAdvisor have created word-of-mouth opportunities that are beyond your control so it’s essential to take control where you can.

One of my favorite resources on this topic comes from a website called GasPedal.com.  They produce two of my favorite newsletters, “You Can Be a Word of Mouth Marketing Supergenius!”  and “Damn, I Wish I’d Thought of That!”

Earlier this week their quick tip involved a couple quick tips about involving employees in word of mouth.  The three quick tips they offer are these:

  1. Give employees guidelines.  This is not to control their interaction but educate them as to how to ethically and honestly participate in conversations about your business, both on and offline.
  2. Give them tools.  Offer employees special discounts for themselves, their family and friends.  If you find something employees are sharing, it might indicate a potentially popular item or service outside your employee network.
  3. Give them status.  On a small scale allow employees, where applicable to get involved with online forums relevant to your business as your companies expert on the subject.  Social media forums function with a personal face and when your employee is allowed to be that expert.

Speaking of services such as Yelp and Trip Advisor… If your business is listed on directories such as these with reviews, it’s a good idea to check them out and respond when appropriate.  I am an avid Trip Advisor user.  When I read a negative review of a hotel that is followed up by an apologetic response from the hotel attempting to resolve or address the issue, I am impressed by the business.  In this way, even a negative review provides an opportunity for positive word of mouth.

Starting July 18, the NALA has a new look!

In February of this year we asked our members what products, benefits and services they wanted.  The answers can be found at our newly designed website being launched tomorrow at theNALA.com.  The homepage provides a one-stop shop for news and information of value to the small business owner.  One new feature we are excited to offer is called “Ask the Expert.”  This benefit provides members an opportunity to get answers, advice and tips from professionals who have spent years in both the small and corporate business worlds.  In addition to answering your personal questions, the homepage provides local news and the new Government Resources section.  This feature links directly to federal, state, local, and tribal government information as well as methods to obtain SBA loans and facts about grants.

Our new homepage is an addition to the benefits we offer, ranging from member discounts, digital medical records, our best price or barter program, speaker series and charity branding.   The NALA will continue to provide easy-to-use and effective marketing tools such as eListings, video marketing, online banner display advertising, email and text messaging and our Business Directory, hosting your own business listing.

The Press Release — A Valuable Marketing Tool

I recently came across a blog reminding me of the value of press releases, particularly in the online world. The blog was called News Releases – The Marketing Tool That Can Drive Huge Traffic Quickly! The writer was specifically speaking of online releases which are cost-effective regardless of your business size.

The online news world is vast and constantly in search of content.  A well designed news release will b appeal to those content publishers such as Google News, Yahoo News or MSN News.  While most attention to an online release will occur between three and seven days of submission the beauty of the Internet is once it is posted it is likely to live there indefinitely.  Because those releases are often distributed into news feeds, they may also land on popular blogs and a variety of websites.

Make sure your release is an interesting topic that offers perceived value or is unique so that readers will be compelled to follow the release links to your website.

The blog does say off-line press releases are not effective because they require the user to write down the information for later use.  I don’t personally agree because I think even having the name of your business mentioned on television, the radio or in a newspaper has value.

Unfortunately we aren’t all experts at writing or distributing press releases.  There are services out there that can do this for you.  This month NALA unveiled their Press Release benefit for their membership.  This program is designed to give your business the buzz it needs to become more relevant in your community.  With a simple form and instructions, NALA can assist the member in designing a release tailored to their business.  Then they release is distributed to print and broadcast outlets as well as 5,500 websites, including Google, Yahoo, Yahoo News and Forbes.    If you are interested in becoming a member contact info@thenala.com.  If you are already a member and would like information on taking advantage of this new benefit contact benefits@thenala.com.

NALA Speaker Series Tax Expert

The National Association of Local Advertisers has a new benefit they are offering their members.  Each quarter they will feature a different expert speaking on topics of interest to small and mid-sized businesses.  Members can be on the call and have their specific questions answered.  Readers of Your Local Post can listen to the calls which will be posted here.

The first expert is the nationally recognized tax expert, Michael S. Fredlender speaking on the Top 10 Things You can do to Reduce Your 2010 Taxes before years-end.  It was a great call filled with a great deal of relevant information.

Reduce costs with Best Price or Barter Program

Best Price or Barter

Craig Miller wrote in an October article called The Benefits of Barter, “With the recovery still going at a snail’s pace, it may not be a bad time to think about the advantages of barter for your business.”  Excess inventory or available time can become a valuable asset in a barter environment.   How much could you benefit from exchanging your excess inventory for bookkeeping services or your bookkeeping services for printing?

I can personally attest to the value of barter.  A friend wanted to build a website for her yoga business but she had no budget and no idea where to turn.  I spent a few hours helping her put something together and in exchange she gave me a few private yoga lessons.  She has her site up and I now know the correct form for poses from downward facing dog to happy baby.  (If you are not familiar with yoga, I promise I did not make these names up).

Unfortunately seeking out individual companies willing to engage in barter with you can take precious time away from your business.  This was the inspiration behind the new NALA Best Price or Barter Program.  NALA members fill out a simple form stating if they are requesting a Best Price or Barter, what product or service they are looking for and what services or products they are willing to offer.  From there NALA will seek out the best price, a barter option or both to fulfill your needs.

It’s important to remember that barter transactions require filing a 1099-B form with the IRS.  Certain transactions are exempt however.  For complete information regarding barter and the IRS please visit http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc420.html.

For information on the NALA Best Price or Barter Program or any of the other benefits associated with NALA membership visit http://thenala.com or contact them directly at info@thenala.com.

Tips to be found on Facebook

Thanks to a very informative webinar today from PR Newswire, I have some interesting tips to share for those of you ready to step into the social networking world.  This particular webinar was all about Facebook so that is where I’m going to focus.  To view the webinar yourself check out the On Demand Webinars section of their site and look for Facebook for Business; How to Effectively Increase Audience Engagement with Your Fan Base.  It’s up now and free.

For starters some fun facts they shared:  250 million of Facebook’s 500 million users log in daily and 150 million of those are mobile users.  42% of Facebook users have an income greater than 75,000 a year.  65% of U.S. Facebook users say they are more likely to buy a product referred with positive feedback from a Facebook friend.

If you are on Facebook already, have you noticed that some posts come up on your news feed all the time?  On the other hand other posters, friends or maybe you, are rarely showing up on the feed?  News feed on Facebook is run via an algorithm, just as search results are.  Facebook has been pretty secretive about that algorithm.  However, social media experts such as the presenter this morning had some suggestions and I thought I’d share a few here.

  1. Start out posting once a day.  You can work your way up to twice a day.  If you have more than one administrator on your site make sure you coordinate who is posting when.
  2. Fan pages are more likely to show up in the news feed if they are engaging and that means likes, comments and click-throughs.  For that reason it’s important to engage your fan base.  They recommended specifying call to action, like asking for friends/fans to “share” this information.
  3. Facebook loves video.  If you upload raw video and friends and fans share it you are in good shape.
  4. Careful about automating your tweets and status updates.  I have been guilty of this and am stopping today!  Apparently Facebook discriminates against automatic feeds.
  5. Cross pollinate – meaning let your site drive traffic to your Facebook page and your Facebook page drive traffic to your website.
  6. Put your fans in charge.  Take a poll and let them participate in your process.
